Arawana. (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum). Max length 4 ft. Max weight 9kg/ 20 lb. Predatory.The Arawana is an elongated fish with silver to green scales with distinctive barbels located on its protruding lower jaw. The Arawana is a member of the Osteoglossidae (bony tongues) family of fish. The Arawana is found in Africa, South Eastern Asia and South America most commonly in the Amazon basin. Swimming close to the surface the Arawana feeds on insects, fishes, snakes and small birds and can jump out of the water 3 feet to catch prey from trees. In recent years Arawana have been introduced to several fisheries in Thailand.
