Monster Fishing at Palm Tree Lagoon in Ratchaburi, Thailand.

Monster Fishing at Palm Tree Lagoon in Ratchaburi, Thailand. - 11 11 2009

A visit to Palm Tree Lagoon in Ratchaburi province saw the Fishsiam team in search of Arapaima and other predatory monster fish.

Fishing at Palm Tree Lagoon begins at 8am and saw the anglers hastily tying up deadbait rigs in order to cast to the many big Arapaimas’ showing out in the centre of the lake.
After dispatching livebaits out into the centre of the lake with the most activity the anglers waited for events to unfold.

A bobbing of one of the floats soon alerted the anglers to a feeding fish and soon after the float was buried into the water as a predator moved off with the bait.

Winding down hard into the fish resulted in an Alligator Gar launching itself out of the water in the centre of the lake.
Several minutes later the prehistoric Alligator Gar was netted and estimated to weigh 17lb’s.

Soon after a deadbait rig being fished in the margins was picked up by another unseen predator as it charged away with great speed.
Winding down into the fish resulted in the fish clamping onto the bottom and creating an unmovable force.

Sustained pressure applied with the Fox travel rod failed to shift the unseen fish which was now looking most likely to be a Giant freshwater stingray.
After ten minutes of sustained pressure and no movement from the fish a boat was produced in addition to a long wooden pole.

Careful probing of the lakebed soon moved the fish which charged off towards the centre of the lake.
Winding furiously to keep the stingray in the upper layers soon brought the fish to the surface where it was given no quarter and quickly pulled to the waiting landing net.

After unhooking the stingray the fish was estimated to weigh 25kg’s and was released after a few trophy shots.

The day continued in much the same fashion with the anglers catching several good Redtail Catfish to an estimated 25kg’s.

Whilst fishing for predators at various parts of the lake the anglers experienced more action from Giant freshwater stingrays but failed to land any further fish due to cut off’s caused by the stingray’s abrasive tails.

Late in the afternoon the anglers fished in a quiet corner of the lake and managed to hook one of the lakes larger Arapaima.
After playing the prehistoric predatory fish for a matter of the seconds the hook fell out leaving the anglers only to guess just how big the monster Amazonian fish had been.

Several other predatory fish were caught including yet more Redtail Catfish and Asian Redtail Catfish
In addition the anglers also caught two species of Asian carp with Rohu to 12lb’s and Small Scaled Mud Carp to an estimated 10lb’s.
