Fish Species > Mrigal

   Mrigal. (Cirrhinus cirrhosus). Max weight 3.7 kg/ 8lb 2oz. Herbivorous. The Mrigal or Small Scale Mud Carp is a native to the Indian subcontinent and has been widely exported to neighbouring countries in Asia. This small member of the Cyprinidae (carps) family of fish is entirely herbivorous feeding on plankton and grazing on algae. The Mrigal has a sleek body covered in small scales and has small reddish coloured fins. The Mrigal’s mouth has a protruding upper lip making it easily recognizable. The Mrigal is present in various freshwater fisheries throughout Thailand.
