Fishing Mekong Catfish Bangkok – 14 03 2011
Rutger from Sweden began his Thailand fishing holiday with a visit to Bungsamran Lake in Bangkok fishing for Mekong and Striped Catfish.
On arrival at Bungsamran Lake Rutger started fishing from the public bank and cast sliding float method rigs towards the numerous Mekong Catfish showing in the middle of the lake.
After only a few moments one of the large floats bobbed a few times before being dragged under the surface.
Winding down into the fish saw the rod bent over double as a Mekong Catfish powered off across the lake.
Rutger played the fish well and soon had the Mekong Catfish within netting range. The Mekong Catfish was estimated at a weight of 20kg’s and was quickly released back into the lake.
Further casts towards the showing catfish resulted in more Mekong Catfish of a similar size which all battled every inch to the net.
After a short break for lunch the angler returned to his swim fully rested in readiness for more action from the hard fighting Mekong Catfish.
After landing several more Mekong Catfish one of the rods literally ripped off as line began to be pulled from the spool at an alarming rate.
Rutger once again lifted into the fish causing the Mekong Catfish to charge off across the lake causing a large bow wave out in the lake.
The battle on this occasion was a much more protracted affair which lasted twenty minutes and saw the Mekong Catfish charging off to the furthest corner of the lake.
Finally Rutger managed to regain some control over the Mekong Catfish and slowly pumped the Mekong Catfish closer to the waiting landing net.
After a few fraught moments in the margins which saw the angler steering the Mekong Catfish from the nearby snags the Mekong Catfish was netted and hauled onto the unhooking mat.
The Mekong Catfish was a much larger and more muscular specimen which was proudly held aloft for the camera.
Fishing Mekong Catfish enabled this monster catch which was estimated to weigh 40 kg’s+ and was photographed before release.
Rutger fished for the remainder of the day catching a succession of further Mekong Catfish and Striped Catfish.
At the end of the days fishing in Bangkok the Swedish angler had amassed a twenty fish haul of monster fish topped by a large 40kg+ Mekong Catfish
