A short one day trip saw a Malaysian client guided by Boy visiting the Maeklong River in Samut Songkran fishing for Giant freshwater stingrays.
On arrival the angler was soon being transported to a wide section of the Maeklong River which had previously produced big stingrays.
After deploying floats at various points across the river the angler waited for the incoming tide and the stingrays to arrive.
A few hours passed before the river reached its highest point before one of the floats burst into life.
On winding down into the stingray the angler was greeted with a huge amount of resistance as the unseen Giant freshwater stingray moved away powerfully across the riverbed.
With clearly a large stingray hooked deep below the boat was slowly towed downstream for several hundred yards.
The Giant freshwater stingray embarked on several unstoppable runs before each time coming to halt and clamping onto the bottom with unmovable force.
Continued pressure applied from above brought the stingray off the bottom on several occasions in the ensuing battle which lasted almost two hours before the Giant freshwater stingray was finally brought up to the waiting net.
The River Monster was measured at a width of 2.15m with a length of 4.5 m from tip to tail.
The Giant freshwater stingray was estimated to weigh 230 kg+ and was released after a short period for recovery and photography
